We brought our grandson expecting to walk to the main viewpoint. The day was sunny, but heavy rain earlier in the week had left the natural trail far too muddy for us to continue safely.
Had we known how wet the trail remained, we would have chosen another destination that day. Turning back was disappointing—but it was the sensible choice.

WHAT WE FOUND
We did find the small pond near the upper area, which gave our grandson an easier place to explore. It was a modest consolation rather than the main attraction. We’ll return during a dry stretch to complete the Lookout Trail and reach South Point Lookout.

Check the Park District before visiting.
Parking is in the main lot at the bottom of the hill. The South Point viewpoint is reached from the natural Lookout Trail.
For a firmer alternative when trails are muddy, the Park District recommends the rarely traveled asphalt maintenance road to the pond and Den area. It is still a gradual uphill walk of just under half a mile.
Check rainfall from the previous several days. Natural trails may stay muddy even when the day of your visit is sunny.
